Capital Penguins welcomes Thorndon School, Mt Cook School and Lyall Bay School to our exciting SlapShot Hockey Programme for Term 1 of 2015.
Each year the Penguins “SlapShot Hockey” KiwiSport programme provides 100s of children with the opportunity to learn to skate and participate in inline hockey. For many, this is a sport they might not otherwise have access to.
During the programme participants learn a wide range of skills including skating forwards and backwards, how to skate around objects, how to stop, puck handling and passing, intercepting the puck and gaining possession, defending the goal, team play and the basic rules of SlapShot Hockey.
By the end of a term the children have the basic skills to skate and play a game of SlapShot Hockey.
A number of children who have participated in the SlapShot Hockey programme have gone on to join in with Penguins after-school SlapShot and junior club practices which happen on a Tuesday and Thurday evenings at the Kilbirnie Recreation Center.
A huge thank you goes to the Capital Penguins volunteers and Kilbirnie Recreation Centre staff who help make our KiwiSport and After-School SlapShot programmes happpen.
You can read more about the objectives of the programme here including the specific skills that participants will learn.
Parents, if your children are interested in continuing on in their hockey then we have some specific information available for you here. Any questions, be sure to get in touch and perhaps come visit us at a junior training.
We are very grateful to the following organisations who have provided the funding and support we need to make our programme happen:
